Library Redevelopment

“Bricks and mortar can provide a background that is sympathetic to young and energetic minds which are growing and developing apace.”

Sir Basil Spence, architect of the Main Library in George Square

Aim
The University is undertaking a major redevelopment of the Library building at George Square for the 21st century and beyond; an exciting opportunity to create a world-class facility over five years.

The Project
The redeveloped Main Library building will be:

• An intellectual hub for The University: including library materials in both electronic and printed formats; supporting interdisciplinarity; and celebrating past and present achievements of The University.

• The focus for a wide-range of activities in learning and research: including a variety of study spaces, encouraging individual and group study; the provision of a research centre and café.

• More open and accessible: with longer opening hours (up to 24 hours a day); using a similar layout on each floor, with easy navigation; the use of plasma screens to provide information on activities.

• A place to engage and converse with each other and information specialists: including areas where conversation will be encouraged; a high quality seminar and meeting area; convenient help and support, both physical and virtual.

• Flexible to changes in the future: with moveable furniture and adaptable lighting; spaces that can be used for either books or study; pervasive technology built into the building to accommodate changes.
