
Dr Mitchell became the Secretary of the General Council in February 2011. Prior to this he served on the Business Committee of the General Council having been the Convener of the Public Affairs Standing Committee and chair of the Media Group. His education at the University began with a B.Sc. in Biological Sciences (Pharmacology) and continued with a Ph.D. based upon research in neuropharmacology at what was then the MRC Brain Metabolism Unit in George Square.
His subsequent career was primarily in the pharmaceutical industry. It began in R&D and then covered many other areas in research and business in many different countries. Subsequently he worked in other industries in senior management roles, primarily commercial and product development in both the public and private sectors. He was most recently the Executive Director of an international scientific society, CINP, thus has experience of running a membership organisation including arranging conferences and events. He is member of various scientific and professional organisations.
As Secretary of the General Council he is responsible for the administration and organisation of its activities together with the Assistant Secretary, as well as the running of the General Council office and supporting the Business Committee so that it may fulfil its responsibilities.
